Making the decision to go new or used 401 Kable in Odessa, Texas purchased a very used Okuma LB-25 from a shop that was trading up. When the machine was purchased Bob was aware that the spindle drive and spindle bearings would need to be replaced; but he said he knew the iron was sound. Once the new spindle drive was installed the machine was running well. Bob says he has really been impressed by how well the 18 year old machine and controller have performed. He also says the control has been a blessing. The LB-25 was the first CNC Turning Center for the shop 401 Kable purchased the machine from. Owning a machine without a Fanuc Control was a first for 401 Kable. For many operators the LB-25 was most likely their first CNC and we all know getting use to something new takes time and after a short learning curve Bob says they have become comfortable with the machine’s capabilities He regularly pushes a 2-3/4 Komet drill with it and the machine will hold tolerance all day long.
Most recently Bob had an “awe inspiring experience” with his good old machine. His experience happened after a wreck. Bob was holding a piece of 10” round bar 7” long with some short hard jaws. He believes the boring bar insert must have broken because the flying material creamed the door and sent his heart racing.
Bob said he could barely move the door, but he had to keep machining to reach his deadline; so he placed the boring bar back in the same socket and started back on his job. Bob says, to my amazement the turret was off less than .004” and he was running less than 30 minutes after his wreck without any adjustments.Today a focus must be on quality, while adding minimal labor hours.
